Just like any other course, nursing students must write essays from time to time to
show their understanding of a particular subject or topic. A student must understand how to
write a proper academic nursing essay to pass their course. A nursing essay can be written
either during application to nursing school or as part of a nursing program. Most students
would often rush into writing the essay without considering the different steps they have to
take to write a compelling and good essay or analyze the topic. To write a good essay, it is
important to follow the following steps.

1. Read and understand the assignment.

Understanding the essay requirements will guide the student on what the essay
requires, and as they start their research, they will be aware of what they are required to do.
Understanding the assignment also involves knowing the length of the essay, relevant citation
styles, and the type of paper expected.

2. Choose a topic

If a topic is not chosen for you, then the next step would be to select a relevant topic
for the paper. The topic guides the individual on what they will research and the angle they
should take. The topic guides the individual on the research they should conduct.

3. Research

Most nursing information to be used should preferably be as recent as possible. Peer-
reviewed sources are mostly preferred as they give information that other scholars in the
same field have verified. As one conducts the research, it is important to note down the
different sources one obtained specific information from to ensure that they have it easy when
making in-text citations and the bibliography.

4. Draft, Outline, and thesis statement

A draft and an outline should be written during the research to guide the writer when
writing the final paper. The outline serves a guideline when writing the body paragraphs. The
next step is to write a thesis statement. The thesis statement must be a summary of what the

5. Body paragraphs

The body paragraphs should then be developed from the draft made during the research.
Each body paragraph must have one primary topic that it discusses. The paragraph can then
have two or three sub-points emphasizing the main paragraph point. One must ensure that the
paragraph content does not digress from the main topic.

6. Introduction

The introduction should be written after the body paragraphs. This ensures that the
writer already has a synthesis of what the paper contains and the direction it took. As such,
when one writes the introduction, one explains to the reader precisely what the paper is about.
They offer background information and discuss why the topic is important. Writing the
introduction after the body paragraphs ensures that one has all the relevant and necessary
