Part A UNIT 5
The historical tendency of Euro-Canadians is to give little credence or regard to the spiritual/religious philosophies and customs of Indigenous peoples. How is this exemplified in the case of the Inuit? How does the material in this unit relate to your research topic?
Part B

“ The lack of regard for the Indigenous peoples religious customs was exemplified by the Christmas celebrations in Pelly Bay which started increasing in popularity. The attendance grew from 30 people in 1935 to 100 people in 1940 (Remie, C.H.W., 2016, pp. 281). The new celebrations seemed to have replaced the Inuit’s Christmas traditions which included drumming and dancing.
Another issue was that the Inuit had to follow the Catholic rules meaning that they couldn’t continue their hunting and catching on Sundays. Hunting and catching are essential to the way of life and well-being of the Inuit.
Also, in return for the European Canadians setting up their missions the Inuit were to believe that Christianity was the only way to get to heaven and that their beliefs and practices were wrong. The priests taught the Inuit how to baptize their children as the Inuit were led to believe that a child who is not baptized won’t become a little angel. The European Canadians Had no regard for how the Inuit have had to modify or erase their practices to fit into the Christian beliefs and way of life.
This relates to my research topic as this shows the importance of religion and traditional ceremonies of life and death which are and have been historically ignored. My research topics revolves around the MMIWG2 (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People). The indigenous have a right to their culture and deserve to have the body of family members for a proper ceremony/funeral. This is a continuation of ignorance and cultural beliefs by the European Canadians and having no empathy or respect for the human rights of the Indigenous. The indigenous people deserve to be looked for just as much as the European Canadians are.
